What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness can be defined as “the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally”.
The development of mindfulness in everyday life can significantly help us to improve our well-being and to deal more effectively with life’s stressors bringing increased relaxation, enjoyment, stability and clarity of mind.
Mindfulness can be beneficial for almost everyone but can be particularly useful for:
• People experiencing chronic pain, cancer
• People living with stress, anxiety or depression
• People wishing to live richer, happier, more connected lives.
• Parents
• Childbirth
• Children
Regular mindfulness practice can:
• Increase resilience – giving coping strategies for everyday life
• Aid relaxation and sleep
• Increase self-kindness
• Improve relationships
• Give a more positive outlook
• Improve concentration and decision making
• Increased self-esteem and confidence
• Calmer parental responses
• Calmer children
The rise of scientific research since 2000 has been exponential and particularly since 2010, where year on year the rise has increased to over 350 papers published that year alone. This has shown that the cultivation of mindfulness can bring a wide range of physical and psychological benefits.
Each moment is a new beginning, full of possibilities and offers the potential to rediscover what is important and meaningful in our lives. Mindfulness enables us to see things more clearly and to find a calm place from which to meet life’s challenges with growing strength, clarity and confidence. Living mindfully helps us to develop kindness to ourselves and others, and to find more pleasure and fulfillment in our lives and relationships.
In the UK, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has approved mindfulness based approaches for use in the National Health Service.
