EMDR therapy is more commonly recognised for treating PTSD, but it is very successful in treating a wide range of mental health difficulties in clients of all ages including low self esteem, addictions, eating disorders, grief and loss, relationship difficulties and anxiety and depression.
EMDR is international’s recognised and is a recommended therapy in the NICE guidelines – UK.
How does EMDR therapy work ?
If you have been involved in a traumatic event, you will more than likely may feel overwhelmed and your brain may be unable to fully process what is going on. If you think of your memories as being sorted in an orderly way , like in a filing cabinet, dysfunctional memories are not in order so they can remain very intense and vivid.
EMDR aims to help the brain refile and reprocess the memory properly so that it is no longer so intense. It also helps to desensitise you to the emotional impact of the memory, so that you can think about the event without experiencing such strong feelings. Then this has an positive impact on your mood and overall self value.
