Social media is a necessary medium for modern day DJs, it can help make or it can break you.

For many social media has turned into a compulsion or obsession, always wanting to know what is happening on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat ……
Being separated from our devices takes people into a panic wondering about the latest gossip or news. People experience both physical and psychological withdrawal. Regular users of social media can be more prone to suffer from poor mental health.
Why is social media a necessity for a DJ
DJs use social media to build a fan base and profile of who they are and what they offer, with a view to striking interest in them as DJ/producers.
They encourage a fan base and following in the hope that they can promote themselves and provide insight into the world of the DJ.
These platforms are a crucial part of the DJ toolbox in getting their fans to support them and promote their work across the social media world.
Once DJs become well established and well-known, fans tend to follow every posting and often do provide feedback and support for the DJs they follow.

For the DJ the feedback and sharing are part and parcel of the promotion tool. But it can have the overwhelming effect, fans become hungry for gossip, news, latest gigs, new music and take an active interest in the personal lives of the DJs they follow.
This can become a difficult beast to manage when you become a popular artist, time and resources become scarce, which tends to impact on the time and effort you have available to feed the beast. It can and does have an impact on managing all of the aspects a DJ has to cope with, even sometimes impacting on their mental health. The addictive powers of social media can become a real problem, particularly for those who take comments and criticisms literally. Social media has been shown to influence:,
FOMO- Fear of missing out
Negatively affect a person’s sense of self
Addiction to social media
Can trigger depression
Sleep disorders
Social Isolation
Take time to chill
.
If you find that social media is impacting on your life in a negative way. Then you may need to evaluate your interaction with social media.
- Limit the times of the day you access your platforms.
- Turn off notifications and manage your apps.
- Remember comments are just part of the business, good or bad, you cannot please all of the people all of the time.
- Switch off your devices an hour or so before you intend to sleep, there is nothing worse than your mind whirring when you’re trying to sleep.
- Find a hobby or activity that takes you away from social media, distraction can be a useful tool.
- Look at criticisms in a positive way as a means of keeping sharp. Axe trolls from your platforms, they thrive on making peoples lives a misery.
- Get someone to pre-screen the comments if is it impacting on your functioning.
If you think it is all becoming too much and is impacting on your mental wellbeing, then you should seek help or talk to someone about how you feel.
